Affordable starters are built with longer-life bearings than OE.MDouble sealed ball bearings, with the output shaft seal on the outside of the bearing in your new aftermarket unit. Many OE.M starter motors have an unprotected output needle bearing on the outside of the output shaft seal; moisture can enter the electric motor output cover and follow the armature shaft to the unprotected output needle bearing, which corrodes the outer output bearing. The side bearing is now protected from damaging water ingress, and the second sealed ball bearing is replaceable. Note: Image for reference only. Actual product may vary by vehicle.
