Thank you for viewing.

Hokusai, the origin of "manga" and "anime."
HOKUSAI, the world's most famous Japanese artist. The iconic "Great Wave" painting is a masterpiece, comparable to Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," and is known to everyone. Hokusai left 30,000 works in his 90-year life, and is also known for his free-spirited life, including moving 93 times and using over 30 different art names. In an era with only paper and brushes, his expression is said to be the root of the Japanese entertainment culture of "manga" and "anime" that now dominates the world.

This exhibition is held with the full cooperation of Mitsuru Urakami (Urakami Sokyudo), who owns 1,700 volumes of "Hokusai Manga." The exhibition features all 15 volumes of the Urakami Collection's "Hokusai Manga," known as the best in the world in terms of quality and quantity, as well as various illustrations from Yomihon (illustrated books), "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (commonly known as "The Great Wave"), the masterpiece "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" in three volumes and 102 illustrations from his later years, in which he called himself a "painting maniac," and 16 previously unreleased hand-painted works, for a total of over 400 exhibits.

With a new exhibition production that focuses on works that can be said to be the origin of modern manga and anime expressions, such as "speed lines," "gag depictions," and "anime original drawings," this will be a valuable opportunity to experience the "work of Hokusai" from 200 years ago.
