This statue was created in the style of an Asante/Ashanti Akua’ba doll. Actual place of origin, composition, and dating of this piece are unknown.

An Akua’ba functions as a fertility icon, believed to induce pregnancy and ensure a safe delivery. The best-known examples, featuring disproportionately large disc-like heads, like this one, are those of the Fante people (sometimes Fanti) from the central coast region of Ghana in western Africa.

The legend has it that a tribal priest instructed a barren woman named Akua to craft a wooden doll (“Akua’ba” child of Akua) and to treat it as though it were her own living child. Carrying an akua’ba on ones back has since become customary practice. Women will adorn the doll with clothing, and ritually feed and care for it.

The statue is 9.5” tall, and is a light 4.75oz. Note the tiny hole at the very top of the head that will facilitate tethering. Wear and minor markings are present throughout. Please inspect the photos carefully.
