The Rhode Island state quarter is a coin issued by the United States
Mint as part of the 50 State Quarters program, released in 2001. The
reverse side of the coin features an image of the famous sailing ship
"The Blackstone Valley", with the words "The Ocean State" and "1640"
engraved on the coin.
The design was chosen to commemorate Rhode
Island's maritime heritage and its status as the state with the longest
coastline in the country. The coin's obverse side features the standard
portrait of George Washington, as with all other state quarters.
